Employment 16-24 year olds It was felt, from an early stage, by the members of the Community Working Group that the issue of youth unemployment in Norbiton was a matter for concern. This includes the category of NEETS (Not in Employment, Education or Training). Recent figures show there are over one million young people in this situation, nationally. Therefore a sub-group was created to examine the situation here in Norbiton. Our initial work consisted of establishing the extent of the problem and also making contact with, and gaining the co-operation of, potential principal partners such as the Job Centre, Kingston College, Kingston Adult Education and Kingston Council, plus other organisations who may have an interest. When the first phase of our work is complete we intend to draw up recommendations that will extend, streamline, strengthen and improve the quality of assistance available to the young people of Norbiton.
The group has succeeded in establishing connections between RBK and ‘This is our community‘, a social enterprise specialising in helping young people realise their potential. Apprenticeship preparation schemes under the auspices of the Barclays Apprenticeship Scheme have already taken place with great success. |
