All residents and businesses in Kingston’s Norbiton Ward were leafleted and invited to attend a public meeting on 10 June 2012 at the Kingsmeadow Stadium. (Agenda).
The event was part of the One Norbiton project, one of thirteen pilots around the country set up under the Government’s localism agenda, to give people more say in how local services are run.
One of the organisers of the event, local resident, Davinder Lail, said
“So far a small group of local people have been working with the Council and others to get the project off the ground. Now we need to get the ideas and involvement of many more residents so that we can work together on the things which people really want to see improved in Norbiton. Those things could include better housing, cleaner streets, more opportunities for young people and so on.”
Attendees at the event had the chance to learn more about the project and feed in their views on what would most improve their quality of life. There was also an excellent presentation about the pioneering work of the residents of Balsall Heath in Birmingham, who transformed their neighbourhood into one of the most attractive parts of the city. See a description of their progress here.
The event was held from 1.30pm on Sunday 10 June in the Fans’ Bar, Kingsmeadow Stadium, Jack Goodchild Way, 422a Kingston Road, Norbiton. Read the minutes of the meeting here, and feedback summaries here and here. Summaries and photos are available here.

Progress so far
Over the past year we’ve held workshops and surveys to identify the main priorities for local people. These have included things ranging from cleaner streets to improved housing, reduced crime and more opportunities for young people.
We’ve set up specific groups to take forward ideas for improving those things. [Click here to find out more about the work of those groups.]
Current activities and forthcoming events
We have sent a mail out to all the households in Norbiton asking people for their priorities for improving life in the area [click here to give us your views].
