One Norbiton\u2019s \u201cRewarded Volunteering”<\/strong><\/h1>\n

One Norbiton is aiming to create an equal partnership of local\u00a0volunteers. This will not only promote self-respect and neighbourly cooperation\u00a0but also create a coherent and representative community voice\u00a0on matters of mutual concern.\u00a0In the spirit of such participatory democracy, we do not want anyone\u00a0in our membership to be considered superior to anyone else. Therefore no\u00a0member \u00a0is employing any other. Even though collectively, all of us, through\u00a0our taxes, are the ultimate employers of our public servants, we are\u00a0encouraging even these to alter their status by becoming active members\u00a0and enjoy participating as volunteers alongside us. We recognise that most of our members will contribute only by\u00a0voting and relatively few will be key activists who work at the centre of our\u00a0organisation. Doing the latter, will always demand much more time and skill\u00a0than can be expected from ordinary volunteering. This is why we have\u00a0created the concept of \u201cRewarded Volunteering\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For example we are\u00a0currently rewarding a disabled volunteer to do all our administration by\u00a0paying her honoraria worth less than \u00a34800 pa \u2013the maximum allowable\u00a0before she loses benefits. This is proving financially beneficial to One\u00a0Norbiton, as it would cost us over 25k a year were we to engage a full time\u00a0employee.\u00a0For less burdensome tasks, such as the One Norbiton Taskforce, we\u00a0have adopted a similar concept to that used by The Community\u00a0Development Foundation and offering honoraria, proportionately matched\u00a0to hours of volunteering. However, because both our NEETs and\u00a0Recovering Substance Abusers could incur loss of benefits if rewarded in\u00a0cash, we are providing them with gifts of Vouchers, similarly matched to thehours they have spent volunteering. We treat our \u201cNorbiteens\u201d in the same way and although this group has child-care issues, obviously they have no\u00a0restrictions due to benefits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
